The World Cup is the thing this weekend, and it's not close. We're down to the quarterfinals now, eight teams left, and Sandy Springs is throwing a watch party right on City Green Saturday at 3. Two big screens, food trucks, yard games, and room on the grass to watch with a real crowd. It's free, so you just show up. It's also the first time the tournament has been on US soil since 1994, so catching it a few minutes from home is about as close as most of us will get. We plan to be there.

There's also Second Saturdays at Ashford Lane, which runs 4 to 7 on The Lawn and keeps the 250th birthday going with live music and a lot of red, white, and blue. Both it and the watch party are outdoors, though, and Saturday afternoon has a real shot at storms, so keep an eye on the radar.

If the sky opens up, Message in a Bottle in Dunwoody makes a good rainy-night backup. Coastal seafood, a screened-in porch, and a key lime pie worth saving room for.

Watching a match this big with a crowd on a summer Saturday beats your couch every single time.

It starts at 3 PM, no tickets, just show up. City Springs is calling it a once in a lifetime thing, and honestly, they're right. This is about as close as most of us will ever get to a World Cup in our own backyard. Grab someone who'll actually cheer with you and go.

Kroger is looking to take over the former Walmart in Perimeter Village on Ashford Dunwoody Road, filling the 117,736-square-foot western suite with a Marketplace-model store, an interior Starbucks, and 526 parking spaces. The request includes a special-use permit for a drive-thru pharmacy plus variances for a gas station.

The North Atlanta Church of Christ property straddling Dunwoody and Sandy Springs is being eyed for a 24-home community, with 3 of those homes on the Dunwoody side and 21 on the Sandy Springs side. The Providence Group of Georgia is the applicant, and the Sandy Springs portion was already rezoned back in May.

Infill like this quietly reshapes a neighborhood, and the process is early enough for residents to weigh in. The Dunwoody piece goes before the Planning Commission on July 14, with a City Council decision still to be scheduled.

Ashford Lane throws open The Lawn on the second Saturday of every month, and the July edition lands right near America's 250th birthday. That means the usual live music and family programming, dialed up with a red, white, and blue theme for the milestone.

Here's how it actually works. The Lawn is the open green in the middle of the development, ringed by shops and restaurants, so you wander over, stake out a patch of grass, and let the kids run around while the music plays. Bring a blanket or a couple of camp chairs if you want to settle in for the full three hours.

The real advantage is everything within a few steps. You can grab dinner, coffee, or a drink from the spots right there and carry it back out to The Lawn, which turns this into a whole dinner-plus-entertainment night without a second stop. It's stroller friendly and usually dog friendly, so nobody has to get left at home.

Parking is free in the Ashford Lane decks, and the 4 to 7 PM window means you can still get younger kids to bed at a reasonable hour. No tickets, no cover, no reservation.

🏘️ 33 townhomes proposed on Ashford Dunwoody Road head to review

Lennar is behind a plan for 33 four-story townhomes on about 3.4 acres at 4891 Ashford Dunwoody Road, near the LifeSouth site. The units would run around 2,800 square feet and are expected to sell for about $850,000.

The rezoning goes before the Dunwoody Planning Commission in August, followed by the first of two City Council public hearings in October. If you live nearby, those are the meetings to watch.
