There's a dinosaur at Fernbank that's been standing in that building since June 13, and it closes Monday. T. rex: The Ultimate Predator closes September 7, which is Labor Day, which means this weekend is the last normal weekend you get with it.

We've been saying we'd go since June. Eleven weeks of saying it. Not doing that again.

Friday night has a free answer if you'd rather stay close to home. Dunwoody's putting Fantastic Four: First Steps up on a screen at Pernoshal Park at dusk (about 8:30), and they're handing out popcorn, candy and giveaways for nothing. It's the last one of the year, so if you've been meaning to catch a movie in the park, this is the whole window.

We also owe you a dinner. Rumi's Kitchen on Roswell Road reopened in March after a renovation that started at $3.5 million, and it also added a pastry chef the owner chased for five years. We've got thoughts below.

Here is the part that changes how you read this. The exhibit has been on view since June 13 and it comes down September 7. That is Labor Day Monday. So unless you're the kind of person who spends a holiday Monday at a museum, this weekend is it.

It was organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and the good stuff is the stuff you touch. There's a roar mixer where you build what a T. rex may have actually sounded like, layering the pieces yourself. There's a shadow theater where a full-scale skeleton gets up and moves. There's a life-sized animation that responds to where you walk, which is the one that gets kids yelling.

The nerdiest thing in the room is a praxinoscope, an old spinning-drum animation toy, and they used it to show the difference between a T. rex walking and a T. rex running. It takes ten seconds to understand and you'll think about it later.

The exhibit also walks the family tree back to Proceratosaurus bradleyi, the earliest known tyrannosaur, and traces how a T. rex goes from a fluffy turkey-sized hatchling to the thing standing in front of you.

Two practical notes. Your ticket covers every indoor exhibit, one Giant Screen movie, WildWoods and Fernbank Forest, and parking is free, so this is a full day and not a one-room stop. Second, buy online. Tickets bought at the counter cost $3 more per person and Fernbank is cashless.

Saturday adds a free Meet a Ranger walk at 11:30 AM. Sunday adds a Family Nature Walk at 11:30 and a Dino Talk at 2:00. Friday has nothing scheduled, but Friday is also two dollars cheaper a head.

One more thing before you go: the café is closed while it turns into Bean Sprouts, so it's a food truck and a caterer right now. Pack a plan for lunch. Then go see the dinosaur, because Tuesday it's a memory.

If you haven't been since March, you haven't been. Rumi's closed its Roswell Road flagship for a renovation that was budgeted at $3.5 million and did not stay at $3.5 million, and reopened March 6 with a rebuilt room, a rebuilt bar and about a third of the menu turned over. Owner-chef Ali Mesghali opened this place twenty years ago.

Order the sea bass. The Chilean sea bass with dill and fava bean basmati is $65. If you want the thing everybody orders instead, the chicken barg is $35, saffron-marinated breast over saffron rice, and it is the name that shows up over and over in recent reviews.

The new stuff is worth your attention. Lamb ribs with a grape molasses glaze at $24, borani kale at $16 with shallot and roasted garlic under yogurt, and a roasted crimini and oyster mushroom hummus at $18 that comes with warm lavash they keep replacing without being asked. If you are feeding a table, the pomegranate short rib is $170 and feeds three or four.

Save room. Mesghali spent five years trying to hire pastry chef Sohrob Esmaili, who won Food Network's Spring Baking Championship in 2021, and the Persian ice cream sandwich he makes with saffron, rosewater and clotted cream is the reason kids come back.

The wine list is the sleeper. It leans biodynamic and organic producers out of Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Armenia and Georgia, which almost nobody in Atlanta is doing. There's also a water menu, which sounds ridiculous until somebody explains it to you.

Two honest things. Parking is valet only and it is $3, so there is no street option to hunt for. And the sound-absorbing plaster they installed to fix the old room's noise problem only partly worked. Reviewers who love the food still mention the music being loud. Book ahead, dress business casual, and ask for a table away from the bar if you actually want to talk.

Dan Belman and Randy Korando signed a lease on a failing garden shop in 1995 and opened it 45 days later. Everybody told them they'd fail, because neither of them had ever worked in retail. They bought product during the day and knocked out walls at night, and they built the checkout counter out of old doors. Thirty-one years later they still own it, and in 2009, in the middle of the recession, they opened a second store across the street.

The thing that makes it work is the buying. Belman and Korando still take the trips themselves, including to France, and Belman's line about it is blunt: what determines your success isn't how well you sell, it's how well you buy. They still hand-pick every plant, and they've used the same local orchid grower since the day they opened.

Here's the part we like. Belman says his employees stay an average of 12 to 15 years. In retail. That's not normal, and it shows up in the reviews, where people name the staff instead of the store.

Right now is the good season. The outdoor department is filling with fall mums and autumn plantings, and the farm-fresh Christmas wreaths and garlands land right behind them. There's also a full in-house floral department doing parties, funerals, weddings and school dances, plus grab-and-go arrangements if you walk in needing something in ten minutes.

The awards back it up. Home Accessories Today named it one of the top 50 retailers in the country, and it's in the Hall of Fame for Atlanta Magazine's Best of Atlanta.

One honest caveat: this is a full-price shop and they say so themselves. Live plants, seasonal items and jewelry are non-returnable, everything else is 14 days with a receipt, and the one-star reviews are all people who wanted an exception and didn't get one. Go to browse and splurge, not to bargain.

The city council voted August 18 to waive $1.775 million in impact and permit fees for the developer redoing the North River Shopping Center at 8830 Roswell Rd, Sandy Springs, GA. That waiver is half of a $4.33 million incentive package going to Woodfield Development. The Sandy Springs Development Authority approved the other half, a 10-year property tax abatement valued at $2.55 million, at a special-called meeting on August 26.

What the city gets is a 0.71-acre public park it will own outright, with a playground, a pavilion, greenspace, signage and 70 parking spaces. Woodfield's investment in the park piece alone runs past $6.5 million including land value. Economic Development Director Chris Burnett said the recreation and parks design is nearly done, and that total project investment across the 13-acre site could hit $200 million. The rest is 336 market-rate apartments, 85 for-sale townhomes and 10,000 square feet of retail.

Mayor Rusty Paul was the one who put the asterisk on it. A REIT previously bought up townhomes along Roswell Road that had been promised as owner-occupied and turned them into rentals, and he was not shy about it: "That's why we're a little apprehensive, if you will, about this, to make sure that we get what is promised. It's not a lack of trust, but it is a 'trust but verify' kind of situation." Woodfield has to close on the site by the end of September.

The Dunwoody Planning Commission spent two hours on August 11 and came out having unanimously approved two rezonings and a special land use permit. All three now head to City Council.

The first rezoning puts 24 homes behind the North Atlanta Church of Christ off Roberts Drive, three on the Dunwoody side and 21 already rezoned on the Sandy Springs side. Houses run 3,500 to 4,500 square feet, starting around $800,000, with one access point at the signalized Spalding Drive and Pitts Road intersection. Nobody spoke for or against it.

The second one is more interesting. Thirty-three townhomes on 3.42 acres at 4891 Ashford Dunwoody Rd, Dunwoody, GA, on the current LifeSouth Blood Bank site, rezoned out of Office-Industrial into Perimeter Center. The bigger units run about 2,100 square feet at an estimated $650,000, the smaller ones about 1,500 square feet around $500,000, all three-bedroom with a rear-load two-car garage. Alex Brock with Smith Gambrell & Russell told the panel it's an owner-occupied product the area hasn't had available in years.

Then there's the pickleball. The Marcus Jewish Community Center got approval for a 10,000-square-foot indoor facility with four courts, next to the 12 outdoor courts that opened in June 2024. A resident on Dunwoody Glen told the commission what it has been like: "All I hear is pickleball noises 14 hours a day on the weekdays and 12 hours a day on weekends." She said the court lights reach her sunroom. The MJCCA argued the indoor courts will reduce noise and said it installed an acoustic-wrapped fence within the last month. Staff attached conditions anyway, including a 40-foot buffer of mature tree canopy along the southern line and adjusted hours.

If you live near Roberts Drive, Ashford Dunwoody or Dunwoody Glen, the council vote is the one left to show up for.

DeKalb County School District announced on August 21 that it is restarting its Student Assignment Project, beginning with six overcrowded clusters. Three of them are ours: Dunwoody, Chamblee, and Cross Keys. The work is tied to new and expanded schools opening between 2027 and 2029, including Dresden Elementary, Cross Keys High, Sequoyah Middle and High, Idlewood Elementary, and an entirely new high school cluster. Attendance boundaries are genuinely in play.

The Dunwoody cluster is Austin, Chesnut, Dunwoody, Hightower, Kingsley, and Vanderlyn elementaries, plus Peachtree Middle and Dunwoody High. The Chamblee cluster is Ashford Park, Doraville United, Huntley Hills, and Montgomery elementaries, plus Chamblee Middle and Chamblee High.

Two ways to weigh in this week. The public comment session for our three clusters is tonight, Thursday, September 3, 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Chamblee High School. It runs like the public comment portion of a school board meeting, so come prepared to speak. The online survey closes Tuesday, September 8 at 11:59 PM, and finishing it also lets you sign up for a small online focus group. Two more rounds follow in later September and October.

This is a reboot, not a continuation. The earlier version proposed closing dozens of schools, drew months of pushback, and the district changed direction in the spring. DCSD says no recommendations have been made yet, and the under-enrolled clusters come up in January 2027.

Somebody found Smooches outside. That's the whole origin story anybody has, and she's been in the DeKalb County Animal Services system since July 28, currently living in a foster home rather than a kennel, which means the notes on her are from a person who actually lives with her.

Those notes are unusually specific. She is the ultimate cuddle buddy who loves being held, gives affectionate licks, and sits with you during daily household chores. She's fully litter-trained with what the listing calls an immaculate track record. And she gives playful, gentle finger nibbles, which is either charming or a warning depending on your relationship with cats.

She is six years old, eight pounds, black, spayed, and the listing describes her energy as medium to low. The line they lead with is that she thrives on human connection. If you want a cat who's going to be in the room with you, that's this cat.

Two honest things. First, DeKalb hasn't rated her with kids, dogs or other cats, so nobody has scored it either way. Her foster parent is the person who would actually know, and that's a fair first question. Second, her breed isn't published. LifeLine doesn't DNA test and doesn't guess, so she's listed as a black cat and that's that.

The adoption fee is $65, or $40 if you are 55 or older. Because she's in foster, there's no walking in to meet her. You submit the inquiry form on her page and her foster parent gets back to you within about 72 hours to set up a meet.

Worth knowing: the shelter is currently running a banner saying it's out of kennel space. Every adoption out of foster frees one up.

Dunwoody only does three of these a year. June, August, and this one. After Friday the screen goes back in storage until next summer, so if you've spent the whole season meaning to do a movie in the park and never got around to it, the window is one night wide.

The city isn't just putting a movie up either. They're handing out free popcorn, free candy and giveaways, which means the entire evening genuinely costs you nothing except a blanket and the drive over.

Pernoshal Park is the right venue for it. Open lawn, easy parking, and close enough that if somebody melts down at 9:15 you're home ten minutes later.

One thing to check before you commit the whole family: Fantastic Four: First Steps is rated PG-13. For a lot of Dunwoody households that's a non-issue, but if your youngest is five, know what you're walking into.

School is back and if there's a new license in your house, your auto premium is about to move. Before you just absorb it, ask your agent about the discounts that actually exist for young drivers, because most carriers offer several and almost nobody applies for them unprompted. The common ones are a good student discount tied to a grade average, a discount for a student who goes away to school and leaves the car at home, and credit for completing an approved driver training or defensive driving course. One more thing to ask about: how your carrier assigns drivers to vehicles, because which car your teen is rated on can change the number more than people expect.
