What's up, neighbors!

We're pretty excited about the Sandy Springs Invitational Car Show at City Springs on Sunday. 120+ classic, exotic, and police vehicles on the City Hall campus, $10 to get in, and it benefits the Sandy Springs Police Foundation. Weather is mid-80s and clear all weekend, so the timing couldn't be better.

Sunday night, Samantha Fish and Tab Benoit are at Byers Theatre. Fish just opened for the Rolling Stones. Benoit swept four blues awards last year and put out his first album in thirteen years. They close the show together on stage and reviews from earlier on this tour say that's when the night really opens up. Tickets start at $56 and it's a small room, so it actually feels like a show.

If you've been meaning to catch Steel Magnolias at Stage Door in Dunwoody, this is the last weekend. Seventy-seat room, free parking, $32, and it closes Sunday. Full weekend planner, a gas station burger, and a wine shop are all below.

Summer is getting booked. If your family is anything like ours, you've probably already locked in at least one trip, maybe a beach week, maybe flights somewhere. Feels good to have it on the calendar.

But here's something most people don't think about until it's too late: what happens to your house while you're gone for a week?

A pipe bursts Tuesday. You don't find out until Saturday when you walk in the door to wet carpet and a water bill that looks like a typo. Or a storm knocks a limb through a window Wednesday night, and your house sits open to the elements for four days before anyone notices.

Most homeowners policies cover the damage itself, but the longer it goes unaddressed, the worse it gets, and insurers can push back on damage that "could have been mitigated" if someone had been around. That's not a technicality. That's a real conversation claims adjusters have with homeowners every summer.

A few things worth sorting out before your trip, not after:

  • "Loss of use" coverage: If something happens and your home isn't livable when you get back, this is what pays for a hotel and meals. Know your limit. Some policies cap it surprisingly low.

  • Water damage specifics: Slow leaks and "gradual damage" are handled differently than sudden pipe bursts. Know which your policy covers and which it doesn't.

  • Vacancy clauses: Some policies have language about homes left unoccupied for extended periods. If you're gone for two weeks, it's worth a two-minute check.

  • Travel insurance: Separate from home and auto, but if you're booking flights and rentals, it's worth knowing what you're actually protected against if plans fall apart.

Peachy Insurance is Atlanta-based and built to answer these kinds of questions fast. No pressure, no upselling. Just a clear picture of where you stand before you leave town.

🎸 Samantha Fish + Tab Benoit: When Two Tours Collide

Saturday, April 19
7:00 PM
Byers Theatre, Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center
1 Galambos Wy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328
From $56

Samantha Fish just got done opening for the Rolling Stones. Tab Benoit swept four Blues Blast Awards last year and put out his first album in thirteen years, which hit number one. Now they're both at Byers Theatre on Saturday night for one show.

Fish plays loud and hard, modern blues with serious guitar chops. Benoit is the other thing entirely, slow-burn Louisiana swamp blues, the kind of stuff that sounds like it came up from the bayou. Reviews from earlier on this tour say they close the night together on stage, which is the part worth staying for.

Byers is a small room. $56 gets you in. This is not a Tuesday night cover band at a bar, and it won't feel like one.

🍔 NFA Burger

Inside the Chevron, 5465 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd, Dunwoody, GA 30338

My wife and I drove past this place three times before we finally stopped. It's inside a Chevron on Chamblee Dunwoody Road. You order at a counter, grab a drink from the gas station cooler, and wait outside at the picnic tables. The whole setup takes about five minutes to figure out and then you forget it's a gas station entirely.

Billy Kramer spent 25 years in corporate before walking away to make the one thing he actually cared about, which was the perfect smash burger. He started as a pop-up in 2018, landed inside the Dunwoody Chevron in 2019, and hasn't left. Food and Wine named it best burger in Georgia. Thrillist put it in the top 47 in America. The AJC called it Atlanta's best. All of that from a guy with a grill and a gas station.

Order the Classic. It's a double smash on a Potato Roll with American cheese, pickles, mustard, and his house Sassy Sauce. Get the Sassy Tots too. Fried in beef tallow, crispier than anything you'd expect. The Southsider is a Vienna beef sausage if you want something different, and it's worth trying once.

Closed Monday and Sunday. Drinks are sold separately from the gas station cooler. Lines move fast but lunch on a Friday gets deep.

🍷 Perrine's Wine Shop

5920 Roswell Rd Suite B108, Sandy Springs, GA 30328

If you've ever walked into a wine shop, grabbed something that looked familiar, and left feeling like you missed something, this place is the fix for that.

Perrine Prieur opened her first shop on the Westside in 2010. The Sandy Springs location came in late 2023, just off Roswell Road. The shop carries exclusively family-owned, small-production wines with a heavy focus on organic and biodynamic producers. No big commercial labels. The staff knows every bottle on the shelf, where it came from, and what to eat with it. Several reviews mention walking in for one thing and leaving with something they never would have picked on their own. That's a good sign.

The tasting room in the back seats 24 and they run regular public tastings plus private events. Book club, birthday, girls night that's a step above a restaurant reservation. Worth a call.

Mon-Sat 11am-7:30pm

🔒 Dunwoody approves Flock Safety camera contract after heated debate

The Dunwoody City Council voted unanimously on Monday to approve a $200,000 master services agreement with Flock Safety for its license plate reader camera network, along with a separate $15,000 contract for Flock's 911 technology. The vote came after the contract had been deferred twice over privacy concerns, and dozens of residents in attendance responded with chants of "shame" after the decision.

The controversy intensified after a resident's open records request revealed that Flock sales representatives had accessed interior cameras at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta, displaying footage of children swimming and doing gymnastics, despite the private network being flagged as "do not share." The modified agreement now includes several guardrails: the city retains full ownership of all captured data, a federal sharing toggle lets the city cut off data access to federal agencies, cameras cannot be used for demonstration purposes, and Flock cannot use data to train AI or machine learning models without City Manager Eric Linton's written approval.

If you have questions about how the cameras will be used in your neighborhood, the full agreement is public record through the city.

Peachtree Corners becomes first U.S. city to launch citywide audio navigation for the visually impaired

Peachtree Corners is now the first city in the country to roll out a citywide deployment of Hear2There, an audio navigation platform that delivers real-time, location-based information to help blind and visually impaired residents and visitors independently navigate indoor and outdoor spaces. The system works through smart virtual signage at participating venues and is always free for users.

The initiative is a partnership with SpartansFirst, which is funding a 30-month free introductory period for participating businesses. Early adopters already live on the platform include City Hall, The Forum, Peachtree Corners Library, YMCA, Hilton, and Mary Our Queen Catholic Church. After the 30-month period, businesses can opt to continue on a fee basis or end participation.

It's another smart-city first for a city that's built its identity around tech innovation at Curiosity Lab.

🏡 Southeastern Designer Showhouse opens Thursday in Sandy Springs

The 11th annual Southeastern Designer Showhouse, presented by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, opens to the public Thursday, April 16 and runs through May 10. This year's home is a nearly 8,750-square-foot residence at 4881 Powers Ferry Road in the Chastain Park neighborhood, designed by architect Linda MacArthur and featuring rooms by 19 designers including Suzanne Kasler and Matthew Quinn.

Proceeds benefit Solidarity Sandy Springs, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing food insecurity by providing access to fresh, nutritious food. Tours run Thursdays through Saturdays, 10 AM to 4 PM, and Sundays, 1 to 4 PM. Daily admission is $50, and there's no on-site parking. Shuttle transportation is available from Chastain Park's Red Lot.

🚨 Dunwoody PD warns of door-to-door pine straw scam

Dunwoody Police are warning residents about a seasonal scam where individuals go door-to-door offering pine straw at a low price per bale. After completing the work, they claim to have used far more bales than originally quoted, leaving homeowners with bills of $2,000 or more. There's no written estimate, so it becomes a "your word against mine" situation.

Seniors are particularly targeted because they're often home alone when these crews show up. If someone knocks offering landscaping services at a deal that sounds too good to be true, ask for a written estimate, check for a business license, and call Dunwoody PD if anything feels off.

🐾 Meet Dale

1-3 year old domestic medium hair

Dale came to Good Mews from a rural county shelter with his brother Chippy, scared and unsure about the whole world. He's a gray domestic shorthair, young, and right now he's learning that trust is worth the risk. When he first got to his foster home, he spent weeks tucked away in hiding. Over the past 45 days, he's made real progress-now he comes out when people enter the room, stays nearby, and eats comfortably in front of his foster family.

He's a little shy. Not standoffish, just cautious. He's not going to launch into your lap on day one, but he's clearly starting to believe people can be safe. Here's the thing though: one specific thing brings Dale immediate joy and confidence. Other cats. He absolutely lights up around feline friends. With every cat he's met, he's incredibly social-rubbing against them, following them around, just wanting to be part of the cat crew.

So if you already have a cat at home, Dale might actually be perfect for you. A patient, quiet home where he has a feline buddy to show him the ropes is probably ideal. He's not ready to live with dogs yet, and his compatibility with kids is still unknown since he's just starting to trust humans. But give him time, consistency, and maybe a cat friend, and he'll get there.

Good Mews is a no-kill, cage-free shelter in Marietta. To meet Dale, start with an inquiry through Petfinder and they'll take it from there.

🌳Abernathy Greenway Playable Art Park

70 Abernathy Road NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328
Open 7 AM to 10 PM daily

Most playgrounds are plastic slides and mulch. This one is six massive art sculptures from designers around the world, spread across a 6.6-acre linear park in Sandy Springs. The city calls it the Playable Art Park, and it opened in 2014 after the Sandy Springs Conservancy and Art Sandy Springs picked the winning installations from over 100 entries.

Morning strategy: Get there before 10 AM on a weekend and you'll practically have the place to yourself. Start at the western parking lot near Johnson Ferry Road and walk east along the paved path.

Kids will spot The Big Imagine first, a set of reimagined swings with no crossbar overhead so you're swinging straight into open sky. Spider Walk is the climbable one shaped like a giant spider that kids can climb inside and hang from. Dragonfly has concrete slides and climbing ropes built into an industrial brick structure with stained glass windows.

Afternoon plan: The pavilion has shaded picnic tables with ceiling fans, first come first served. Bring lunch. There's no food vendor on-site, but you're five minutes from Roswell Road if you need to grab something.

After eating, let the kids explore Wonder Wall (a mosaic of kiln-dried glass panels they can touch and examine) and Twist and Shout (a stainless steel tube jungle that loops and curves in every direction). The sixth sculpture, It's You and Me Kid, is a laser-cut granite boulder split into three interlocking pieces, more of a climbing and exploring piece than a play structure.

Hidden features: The park connects to the Abernathy Greenway South Trail, a half-mile slate chip walking path that continues east toward Wright Road. It's quieter, shaded, and good for a stroller walk while older kids burn off energy at the sculptures.

The rubber matting under the play structures is soft enough that toddlers can roam without worry, and the entire playground area is fenced off from Abernathy Road.

Parking and bathrooms: Free parking lot at the western end of the park near Johnson Ferry Road. Restrooms are on-site near the pavilion. Bike racks and pet waste stations are available if you're biking in or bringing the dog.

🐶 Your Dog Is Friendly. Your Homeowners Policy Doesn't Care.

The weather's great, the windows are open, and your dog is spending a lot more time outside. So is everyone else's. More walks, more kids on bikes, more neighbors stopping to say hi at the fence. That's all good until it isn't.

Here's the thing nobody wants to think about: dog bite claims are one of the most common liability payouts on homeowners insurance in the country. And they're not cheap. The average claim runs north of $50,000 when you factor in medical bills, legal costs, and settlements. That's not a pit bull statistic. That's all breeds, all situations, including the "he's never done that before" ones.

Your homeowners or renters policy likely includes some liability coverage for dog-related incidents. But there are gaps worth knowing about before you need to find out the hard way.

What to check:

1) Your liability limit. Most standard policies include $100K to $300K in personal liability. That sounds like a lot until you're looking at a medical bill, a lawyer, and a lost-wages claim from someone who got knocked down and broke a wrist. If your liability limit is on the lower end, an umbrella policy closes the gap for surprisingly little.

2) Breed restrictions. Some carriers exclude specific breeds entirely, or won't cover bite incidents involving them. If you have a Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Doberman, or any breed that shows up on exclusion lists, confirm in writing that your dog is covered. Don't assume.

3) Prior incidents. If your dog has bitten someone before, even if it was minor, your insurer may have added an exclusion at renewal without making it obvious. One prior incident can change your coverage entirely.

4) Where it happened matters less than you think. Liability typically follows you, not your property line. If your dog bites someone at the park, on a walk, or at a friend's house, your homeowners policy is usually still the one responding. Which means your limits matter everywhere, not just in your yard.

The easy move: Next time you're reviewing anything with your insurance provider, just ask: "Is my dog covered, and what's my liability limit for animal-related incidents?" That one question can save you a very expensive surprise.

Not sure where you stand? Peachy can pull it up and walk you through it in 10 minutes.
