Nothing says November like gliding around City Green under the lights and for that reason we're locking in Friday evening for Skate City.

Saturday morning, we'll hit Sandy Springs Farmers Market early (the parking garage fills fast after 9 AM), then swing by Spruill's Holiday Artists Market to knock out some gift shopping before the weekend crowds arrive.

Sunday's the big one: Light Up Dunwoody at the Donaldson-Bannister Farm, where the tree and menorah lighting always feels like the unofficial start of the season.

We'll aim for the 2 PM start to catch the crafts and Santa photos before the lighting ceremonies around 5:30 PM.

Quick tip: bring layers and hand-warmers—temps drop fast once the sun sets.

Your full weekend planner is below!

Best,
Andrew

Donaldson-Bannister Farm (4831 Chamblee-Dunwoody Rd, Dunwoody)

Details & overview
About the farm

Dunwoody's annual "Holiday Homecoming" returns to the historic Donaldson-Bannister Farm Sunday afternoon, transforming the century-old property into the season's unofficial kickoff with live performances, kid crafts from Spruill, and the lighting of both a Christmas tree and menorah as dusk settles in around 5:30 PM.

Hosted by the Dunwoody Homeowners Association with the Dunwoody Preservation Trust, expect crowds as families typically arrive early. Arriving between 2 PM and 4 PM helps beat the longest lines for Santa photos and grab a prime lawn spot before the lighting ceremonies. Local musicians and dancers perform throughout the afternoon, and Spruill Center sets up hands-on craft stations that keep younger kids busy while parents scope out the gourmet food vendors and hot cocoa stands.

Parking on-site is limited, so a rideshare or a short walk from nearby street parking works best. The event is stroller friendly and a compact blanket helps for quick sit-downs. Be sure to layer up and tuck hand-warmers and a small flashlight in your pocket for the walk back to the car.  Once the sun goes down, temperatures drop with it.

Pro tip: bring a sharpie to label kids' cocoa cups; everyone’s look identical and before you know it everyone is drinking from the wrong cup.

The farm itself dates to the 1800s and remains one of Dunwoody's most intact historic sites,

What to expect:

  • Performances & activities: Local musicians/dancers, kid crafts (Spruill), photos with Santa, and the tree & menorah lighting to close the afternoon.

  • Crowds & timing: The sweet spot for families is 2:00–4:00 p.m. when lines are shortest; lighting ceremonies happen as dusk hits.

  • Getting there: Limited on-site parking—rideshare or a short walk from nearby street parking is your friend. Strollers are common; bring a compact blanket for quick sit-downs on the lawn.

  • Comfort kit: Layers, hand-warmers, a small flashlight for the walk-back, and a sharpie to label kids’ cocoa cups.

Hosted by Dunwoody Homeowners Association with Dunwoody Preservation Trust.

Our Favorites

🍽 The Select (City Springs, Sandy Springs)

6405 Blue Stone Rd Suite 200, Sandy Springs, GA 30328

This French-Mediterranean spot delivers polished elegance without the stuffiness—think white tablecloths that welcome both date nights and family celebrations.

The dining room is spacious and inviting, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking City Green, making it an ideal pre- or post-show pick when you're catching a performance at City Springs Theatre or skating with the kids.

Check out happy hour for 1/2 price apps and a beautiful bar.

The menu leans seasonal and ingredient-forward, balancing shareable plates with substantial entrees.

Weekend brunch draws a loyal crowd for the short rib hash (rich, hearty, perfectly crispy), while dinner favorites include lobster arancini that arrive golden and creamy—ideal for splitting between two or three people—and a sticky toffee pudding that's decadent enough to share three to four ways (trust us on this).

The wine list is thoughtful but approachable, and the cocktail program hits the right notes if you're looking for something crafted.

Service is attentive without hovering, and the team knows how to pace a meal whether you're rushing to an 8 PM curtain or settling in for a leisurely evening.

If the weather's mild, request a patio table facing the Green—it's the best seat in the house for people-watching and catching the energy of City Springs.

Pro tip: Reservations are strongly recommended, especially Friday and Saturday nights. Street parking can fill quickly during show times, so the City Springs parking deck (free after 5 PM on weekends) is your best bet. The restaurant is steps from the deck exit, making it an easy pre-theater dinner without the parking stress.

Our Favorites

5339 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody

This is the kind of local treasure that makes holiday shopping feel personal again.

Running through the season at Spruill Center for the Arts, the Holiday Artists Market gathers dozens of Georgia makers and artists under one roof—a thoughtfully curated mix of ornaments, jewelry, prints, ceramics, textiles, candles, and locally made goods that you won't find at the mall.

The market operates as a rotating showcase, with new inventory arriving regularly and artists restocking throughout the season, so each visit offers something fresh.

It's an ideal stop for anyone looking to knock out meaningful gifts in one trip: handmade earrings for your sister, a custom pottery piece for the host gift, letterpress cards for the neighbors. Many items are Georgia-made or sourced from Southern artisans, giving your gift list a local story to tell.

The gallery space is open and easy to navigate, making it family-friendly if you're shopping with kids in tow (though little hands should stay tucked). Spruill's location on Chamblee Dunwoody Road means it's an easy midday detour between errands or a quick stop after picking up kids from school.

Pair it with a coffee run at nearby Muchacho or turn it into a longer outing—City Springs ice skating and dinner at The Select are just minutes away.

Parking is free and plentiful in the Spruill lot, and the staff can help with gift-wrapping or artist inquiries if you're looking for something custom. The market typically runs Thursday through Sunday with extended hours during peak shopping weeks, so check their site for current hours and any special artist meet-and-greet events.

⛸️ Winter wonderland returns tomorrow

Skate City Springs opens November 14 at City Green, transforming Sandy Springs' downtown into an ice skating destination through January 19. The real ice rink returns for its third season with new features including glow skating every Thursday and Friday night after dark, plus themed parties like Ugly Sweater Holiday on Ice and Saturday Ice Fever (with DJ!) from 9-11 p.m. on Saturdays. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for kids ages 2-9 (including skate rentals), and advance online reservations are highly recommended since capacity is limited. Pro tip: arrive 10-15 minutes early to snag your skates and get your bearings before hitting the ice.

🌿 Dunwoody's Nature Center unveils major upgrade

City leaders celebrated Monday the completion of a stunning new ADA-accessible boardwalk that's higher, longer, and wider than its predecessor. The 600-foot elevated walkway now sits above the 100-year floodplain and connects to outdoor classrooms, observation decks, and playground areas. The $1.72 million project also included wetland restoration work that removed invasive species, planted 138 native trees (including black willows along the creek), and created better habitat for wildlife. The boardwalk reopens a beloved "hidden gem" that's been off-limits during construction since last November.

🏛️ Historic farmhouse gets caffeinated future

Sandy Springs approved a 10-year lease for Summit Coffee to transform the 1869 Williams-Payne House into a café and creamery concept. The historic two-story farmhouse — which once housed the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum before sitting vacant since COVID — will become a neighborhood gathering spot featuring indoor/outdoor seating, an event lawn, and outdoor bar. Summit Coffee beat out 50+ interested businesses for the prime City Springs location and plans a June 2026 opening. The Davidson, NC-based roaster will bring its small-batch coffee, Summit Creamery ice cream, plus programming like live music, maker markets, and wine tastings to the site.

🗳️ Sandy Springs mayoral race heads to December runoff

Incumbent Mayor Rusty Paul captured 43% of the vote (9,260 votes) in last week's election but fell short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff. He'll face Dontaye Carter, who secured 21% (4,703 votes) in the four-way race. City Council member Andy Bauman finished third with 4,327 votes. The December 2 runoff will determine whether Paul wins a fourth consecutive term or Carter succeeds in his second mayoral bid after losing to Paul four years ago. City Council District 4 is also headed to a runoff between Michelle Sullivan (46%) and Frank Roberts (30%).

5-year-old

🐾 Richard

Meet Richard, a 5-year-old brown and white pup with a smile that could light up the entire Perimeter! This 66-pound gentle giant is currently waiting for his forever home at Fulton County Animal Services, and he's got everything you could want in a companion.

Richard's the perfect mix of playful and mellow. When he first arrives at the play yard, he takes his sweet time checking everything out—but the moment he spots a toy, it's game on! He loves a good game of fetch and will happily bring the ball back for another round. After playtime, this handsome boy is all about the good stuff: treats, head scratches, and yes, belly rubs.

What really sets Richard apart is his brain and his manners. He already knows "sit" and "shake," walks beautifully on a leash, and has that rare gift of reading the room perfectly. He's fantastic with other dogs and would likely thrive in a home with a canine sibling. With his low-energy lifestyle, Richard is ideal for anyone looking for a companion who enjoys leisurely walks and quality couch time.

If you're searching for a smart, affectionate, and easygoing best friend with a grin that'll melt your heart, Richard is your guy!

Adopt Richard: Visit Fulton County Animal Services at 1251 Fulton Industrial Blvd NW, Atlanta, GA 30336. Open Monday-Friday 11am-7pm, Saturday-Sunday 11am-6pm. No appointment needed!

Morgan Falls Overlook Park — Sandy Springs' Riverside Escape

This 30-acre riverside gem opened in 2010 as Sandy Springs' first new park after incorporation, and it remains one of the city's crown jewels. Start at the large shaded playground that consistently receives outstanding reviews, then take in the sweeping views of Bull Sluice Lake—the wide, calm section of the Chattahoochee River formed by Morgan Falls Dam.

Morning strategy (8–10 AM): Early mornings are when the wildlife is most active—watch for river otters swimming in the shallows, blue herons trolling the water's edge, and mist rising off the lake. Birders can spot belted kingfishers, American goldfinches, red-tailed hawks, dive-bombing osprey, and even bald eagles. The riverside porch swings stay cool and quiet before the midday crowd arrives. Bring binoculars for optimal wildlife watching.

Afternoon plan (2–5 PM): The modern playground features two play structures, a tall "spiderweb" rope climbing structure, rock climbing elements, a tilted spinner, and swings—all covered by large sun shades with astroturf underneath (no mud puddles!). The large pavilion with picnic tables, fireplace, and grill accommodates up to 60 people on a first-come basis, or reserve in advance for guaranteed use. Wide open green spaces are ideal for kites, frisbee, or simply spreading out a blanket with a thermos and snacks.

Hidden features: The 2/3-mile wooded hiking trail winds through the forest, offering shade and quieter nature exploration away from the main park areas. The newly opened Springway Trail connector (May 2025) adds another scenic 1.88 miles with an elevated boardwalk crossing Orkin Lake—perfect for extended walks or bikes. Nearly 20 bench swings scattered throughout the park provide peaceful river-view spots. There's also a fire pit surrounded by porch swings and a horseshoe pit for casual games.

Parking tips: Paved lot near the playground fills by mid-morning on weekends. Restrooms and water fountain available by the pavilion. The Springway Trail is open dawn to dusk. Morgan Falls Overlook Park is recognized as an ebird.org birding hotspot.

Cold-Snap Prep: 20 Minutes Now Stops $8,000 in Burst Pipe Damage

Georgia's weather swings from 70°F afternoons to hard freezes overnight with almost no warning, and that's exactly when pipes burst. When temperatures hit 28°F or below for more than a few hours, water inside exposed pipes freezes, expands, and cracks the line—leading to flooding that costs $8,000-$15,000 once you factor in water remediation, drywall replacement, and ruined flooring.

Here's the good news: most freeze damage is completely preventable with about 20 minutes of work split between outdoor and indoor tasks. This isn't theoretical—this is the specific checklist that saves East Cobb homes every winter.

Outside (8-10 minutes):

Disconnect all hoses from outdoor spigots. Even "frost-free" spigots fail when hoses stay attached—the trapped water creates back-pressure that defeats the frost-free mechanism. Unhook every hose, drain them, and store them in the garage.

Cover your spigots. Foam spigot covers run $3-5 at East Cobb Ace Hardware on Johnson Ferry Road and provide real insulation. In a pinch, wrap with old towels secured with plastic wrap or duct tape. Don't skip garage spigots—they're always the first to freeze since they don't get interior heat.

Shut down your irrigation system. Find your vacuum breaker or backflow preventer (usually a brass or green plastic valve near outdoor spigots), turn it off, and open the manual drain valve if you have one. If you're unsure about your setup, spending $75-100 for professional winterization with compressed air is worth it to avoid a $2,000 spring repair.

Locate your main water shutoff right now. It's either in a ground box at the curb (needs a meter key) or inside near your water heater. When a pipe bursts, you have maybe 60 seconds before serious damage begins. Find it tonight, not during the crisis.

Inside (10-12 minutes):

Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls. Most East Cobb homes have kitchen or bathroom sinks on outside walls—open those cabinets overnight to let warm air reach the pipes. This one step prevents the majority of kitchen sink freeze-ups.

Let problem faucets drip. A pencil-thin stream of water (both hot and cold sides running) can't freeze. Target any faucet on an exterior wall or in an unheated space. Yes, it wastes water, but it's vastly cheaper than a burst pipe. Catch the drip in a bucket for plants if you want to offset waste.

Keep your thermostat at 55°F minimum. If you're traveling, never drop below 55°F. The $30 you "save" on heating gets obliterated by a single freeze incident. Even at home, avoid big overnight setbacks during freeze warnings—steady temps protect pipes better than temperature swings.

Close your garage door completely. It's not airtight, but it adds a critical buffer layer. Older East Cobb homes often have exposed water lines in garages—wrap those with foam pipe insulation ($7 for a 6-foot section at Home Depot).

Keep interior doors open overnight. Laundry rooms and mudrooms on exterior walls need heat circulation. If those rooms don't have dedicated vents, leave doors open so warm air can reach the pipes in the walls.

If disaster strikes: The second you see water, shut off the main supply immediately. If water is near outlets or your electrical panel, kill power at the breaker (only if you can do this safely without standing in water). Then call a licensed plumber—burst pipes aren't DIY repairs. Document everything with photos before cleanup for insurance.

East Cobb businesses that can help:

Morningside Plumbing
They've specialized in East Cobb freeze prevention for 20+ years and know every weird pipe configuration in these neighborhoods. They'll winterize irrigation systems, add insulation to vulnerable pipes, and do full freeze-prep inspections for around $125-150. They answer their phone on weekends.
