What's up, neighbors!

Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, so the whole weekend is a costume party. Our plan starts Friday night at the Halloween Silent Disco at Gate City Brewing in Roswell. You pick a channel on your headphones, dance in costume, and nobody can hear how bad your moves are. It's free, so we're bringing a friend who owes us a dance floor.

Saturday evening we're taking the kids to Dunwoody for Haunting at High Street. It's our Event of the Week. The Green gets live music, a stilt walker, a bounce house and a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt through the shops. Kettle corn and cotton candy are on the house, and that's the part our kids will remember.

If you'd rather go to the zoo, Boo at the Zoo wraps up for the year that same day. Sunday morning you get an extra hour, because the clocks fall back at 2 AM. We're spending ours at a table for a late lunch at Kamayan ATL in Doraville, where the pork lumpia and sizzling sisig have been on our list for months.

One reminder for voters. Friday is the last day of early voting, and Election Day is Tuesday. Details below, along with a Roswell glass studio, a Brookhaven house to guess the price on, and a loving hound who picks her person and sticks to them.

When was the last time you actually looked at your homeowners policy?

For most folks in Atlanta and the Perimeter area, the honest answer is "when we bought the house." Which would be fine, except home values in Dunwoody and Sandy Springs are up roughly 40% since late 2020, according to NeighborhoodScout estimates. If your policy hasn't kept up, your dwelling limit may not match what it would cost to rebuild today. That gap won't show up on your bill. It only shows up when you file a claim, which is the worst time to find out.

Just some of the Peachy team

Peachy Insurance is Atlanta-based and built to make this kind of check painless. No call center, no upselling, no runaround. Just a licensed local agent who looks at your full picture and gives you a straight answer on where you stand.

Three things worth a quick look while it's on your mind:

  • Home: Whether your dwelling limit still reflects what it would actually cost to rebuild your house right now

  • Auto: Whether your coverage is current for every vehicle you drive, and whether you have rental reimbursement in case a covered claim puts yours in the shop

  • Bundle: Whether pairing home and auto makes sense for your situation

Takes about 5 minutes. Free, no pressure.

🎃 Haunting at High Street

The Green at High Street
101 High St, Dunwoody, GA
Saturday, October 31, 2026
5:30–8:30 PM
Face painting, kettle corn and cotton candy are free while supplies last
Plan your Halloween night on The Green

Halloween night in Dunwoody has a new home base. High Street turns The Green into a trick-or-treat party, with live music playing the whole time and enough going on that the kids won't stand in one spot for two minutes.

The little ones can get their faces painted for free and watch a stilt walker roam the crowd, and there's a bounce house for burning off sugar. Free kettle corn and cotton candy are handed out while supplies last, so you can skip a snack stop on the way.

The real trick-or-treating happens in the shops. Each kid gets a scavenger hunt card and collects candy from the High Street retailers. Turn the finished card in at the activation table and you get an extra treat.

Got a costume you're proud of? The contest picks three winners, who each take home a prize basket from the retailers plus swag. Winners get announced at 7:45 PM and have to be on The Green to collect, so don't wander off. Groups and families can enter, but each group gets one prize.

Grown-ups have a for-purchase bar on site, and there's a build-your-own tea bar if you want something warm once the sun drops.

Free face paint, candy from the High Street shops and a costume contest on Halloween night, a few minutes from most of our porches. Grab the kids, wear the costume, and GO.

🍽️ Kamayan ATL

5150 Buford Hwy NE, Unit A220, Doraville, GA

Filipino comfort food | A Michelin-listed pop-up turned restaurant, in a bigger room at Asian Square

When the nights finally get cold, my wife and I start wanting something that comes in a bowl or sizzles on a plate. Kamayan ATL is where that craving lands. It started in 2018 as a pop-up, run by Mia Orino and Carlo Gan out of a clubhouse, and it grew into one of the most talked-about restaurants on Buford Highway. This summer it moved next door in the Asian Square plaza, into a bigger room with about 100 seats.

Start with the pork lumpia ($9), crisp little rolls that disappear fast, or the chicharrones ($12). The chicken adobo is $20, with the salty-sweet sauce that makes it the dish most people order first.

If it's chilly out, get the sinigang pork ribs ($21), a sour tamarind broth that warms you up from the inside. The beef kare-kare ($22) is a rich peanut stew, and the sizzling lechon sisig ($23) arrives still crackling on a hot plate. For a group, the crispy pata ($26), a fried pork leg, is the showstopper.

Save room for dessert. The ube churros are $8 and the halo-halo espesyal is $12. There's a vegan kare-kare ($20) too if someone at the table skips meat.

Kamayan is listed in the Michelin Guide, and its founders have been James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalists, so this is not a secret. It's still a place where strangers at the next table share plates and the room is loud and happy.

Here's the honest part. Michelin says reservations are a must, and you can book a table on OpenTable before you drive over. Dining time is capped at 60 minutes for parties of one to three and 90 minutes for four or more, a 20% gratuity is added for parties of six or more, and outside food and alcohol aren't allowed. Most entrees run $20 to $26, so treat it as a real dinner out.

🔥 FlameTree Glass

850 Warsaw Rd, Roswell, GA

Ever wanted to make something out of glass, but you assumed you'd need a furnace and a lot of training? FlameTree Glass on Warsaw Road in Roswell will put a torch in your hands and teach you in about two hours.

Owners Lance and Maureen McRorie are husband and wife, and they've been working glass together since 1999. They found it through a beginner bead-making class in Marietta, taught beginner classes at a bead store, then opened FlameTree as a gallery, supply shop and working studio. They spent some years in Orlando before moving back to Atlanta in 2006. Most of what's in the gallery, they made themselves, and two big viewing windows let you watch the work happen.

The workshop calendar has several classes in the next few days. Thursday, Oct. 29, is a beginner Candy Corn class from 4 to 6 PM, and Saturday, Oct. 31, has a beginner Harvest Pumpkin class from 4 to 6 PM. (The Chain Links class that day, noon to 3, is for students with some experience.) Next week there's a Peace Dove class on Wednesday, Nov. 4, from 6 to 8 PM and a beginner Turkey class on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 4 to 6 PM. Those classes are $95 each. The Saturday, Nov. 7 beginner Blown Ornaments class runs noon to 2 PM and costs $150. Glass, tools, torches and eye protection are all included.

A few things to know first. Lampwork classes are for ages 16 and up, and you pay in full to hold your spot. Cancel with 30 days' notice and you get a refund or credit minus a $25 fee, and under 30 days you get half back. Classes are not for anyone who's been drinking.

Maureen leans toward sculpting in soft glass and intricate lamps, and Lance is the goblet guy, known for whimsical animal shapes. If you're not ready for a class, the gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday and worth a browse.

🗳️ Friday is the last day of early voting, and Election Day is Tuesday

Early voting for the Nov. 3 general election ends Friday, Oct. 30. Advance voting sites in Fulton, DeKalb and Gwinnett are all open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day, and in all three counties you can vote at any advance site in your county, not just the one closest to home.

Close to us, that includes the Sandy Springs Library in Fulton and the Dunwoody Library and North DeKalb Senior Center in DeKalb. Gwinnett has no advance site in Peachtree Corners, so check the county's list before you go.

If you wait for Tuesday, Nov. 3, you have to vote at your assigned polling place, and Georgia polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Not sure where that is? Look up your polling place on Georgia's My Voter Page.

Still holding an absentee ballot? It has to arrive by 7 p.m. on Nov. 3, so mailing it now is a gamble, and you can't drop it off at an Election Day polling place. Drop boxes sit inside select advance voting sites and close at 7 p.m. Friday. Nearby drop boxes include the Sandy Springs Library (Fulton), the Dunwoody Library (DeKalb) and Pinckneyville Park in Berkeley Lake (Gwinnett). You can also bring it to your county's elections office.

🚒 Brookhaven approves a new fire station at Blackburn Park, 3-1

Brookhaven City Council voted 3-1 on Oct. 13 to approve a 50-year agreement that lets DeKalb County build a new fire station at Blackburn Park, 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Brookhaven, GA. The city leases about 1.35 acres for $1 a year, and DeKalb will build, own, operate and maintain it. Council Member Madeleine Simmons voted no.

Neighbors pushed back, citing traffic at the Johnson Ferry and Ashford Dunwoody intersection, the effect on nearby homes and tree removal, and said they only learned about it in September. The vote had been deferred from Sept. 8 for more engagement. Changes added include emergency signal preemption, lighting standards, efforts to limit nighttime sirens, more landscape screening and tree replacement, and about 50 public parking spaces to replace those affected.

Officials call the agreement a first step, with plans to be refined with residents. A third-party assessment will also review how the city tells residents about infrastructure changes. No construction cost was given.

🧹 The Great Dunwoody Cleanup is Saturday, Nov. 14

Dunwoody wants every neighbor with a trash bag and a free morning. The Great Dunwoody Cleanup runs from sunrise to sundown on Saturday, Nov. 14, rain or shine, and you pick your own spot, whether that's a street, a stream, a neighborhood common area or a wooded patch in Dunwoody, GA.

Individuals, families, neighbors, teams, schools and civic groups can all join. Register your plan so the city's stormwater team can track coverage and support you. The goal is to keep litter out of storm drains and local streams.

Post photos on Nov. 14 with #GreatDunwoodyCleanup and email them to [email protected]. Community service hour verification is available if you ask. The city hasn't listed a registration deadline, so sign up early.

🛍️ Goodwill opens a new Doraville store with a free career center

Goodwill of North Georgia opened a 43,000-square-foot store and career center at 5600 Buford Highway NE, Doraville, GA. It's the nonprofit's 72nd store and its seventh in DeKalb County, and 36 jobs were created before the doors opened.

The career center offers free job training in supply chain management, construction and phlebotomy. It also houses the first GoodBIZ Market, where graduates of Goodwill's microenterprise program can sell products from their small businesses.

It's worth a stop for shoppers, donors and anyone thinking about a career change. Check goodwillng.org for store hours.

🐾 Meet Sadie

4 years, Coonhound/Husky Mix

Some dogs greet you and move on. Sadie picks a person and decides you're hers. She's a Coonhound and Husky mix at Shelters and Shelves Rescue, a Brookhaven foster group right in our backyard, and she's looking for the one she gets to follow around.

Sadie is a four-year-old girl, black, and a solid 73 pounds, so she's a real dog, not a lapdog who thinks she is one (though she'll try). Her foster says she's one of the most loving dogs you'll meet. She bonds deep, she wants to be on the couch next to you, and she talks, carrying on in that houndy, half-howl way whether or not anyone knows what she's saying.

The rescue lists her as good with kids, good with other dogs, house-trained and already spayed, which takes a lot of the guesswork out of the first few weeks. Her people describe her as the happiest dog in the room, tail going nonstop. If you want a dog who's going to be genuinely glad you came home, she's the one.

Her adoption fee is $250, which helps the rescue cover her care. Start with the adoption application, and the process runs application, interview, approval, then a meet-and-greet before you sign and take her home. You can also see Sadie's full profile with her photos.

Shelters and Shelves focuses on dogs marked urgent at shelters, the ones passed over on a bad first impression, so adopting from them quite literally opens a kennel for the next one.

🆓 Halloween Silent Disco

Gate City Brewing Company, 43 Magnolia St, Roswell, GA
Friday, Oct. 30 | 7-11 PM | Free

Halloween weekend is here, and one of the best nights out costs nothing. Gate City Brewing in Roswell is turning its taproom into a silent disco, which means everybody wears headphones and dances to music that only you can hear.

Pick your channel, put on your costume, and get on the floor. The listing says all ages are welcome, so you can bring the whole crew. There's a costume contest and a food truck on site, so dinner is handled.

Here's a tip. It's Friday, Oct. 30, from 7 to 11 PM, and headphones are first come, first served, so get there early if you want one. Show up after dinner and you'll still catch most of it.

Half the fun is dancing, the other half is watching everybody else dance hard to a song you can't hear. Bring a friend who'll dance and a friend who'll laugh. Happy Halloween!

Spend 10 Minutes Before the First Freeze and Keep a Burst Pipe From Becoming a Big Claim

When you set your clocks back this Sunday, add a few quick winter chores to the list. The Insurance Information Institute says homeowners and renters insurance covers burst pipes, though what's paid depends on your policy and your limits. Many policies don't cover sewer and drain backups unless you add a sewer backup rider, and flooding from rising water needs a separate flood policy. The best fix is to avoid the damage altogether. Disconnect and drain outdoor faucets and irrigation lines before freezing weather, find your main water shut-off valve so you can stop a leak fast, and check appliance hoses for cracks and bulges.

Not sure how your policy handles a burst pipe or water backup? That's a quick question for your Peachy agent.
