What's up, neighbors!
Sunday afternoon we're headed to the City Green for the 4th annual Sandy Springs Wine Festival. There are more than 175 wines under one big tent, free bites from 13 local restaurants, and a jazz quartet playing the whole time. It's our Event of the Week, and the full wine list is already posted if you like to plan your pours.
Saturday belongs to the car people. The Roswell Motoring Festival parks rare cars, boats and motorcycles all over the Roswell City Hall lawn from 10 to 3, and it's free. Kids 6 to 18 can sign up to judge the cars alongside the real judges, so expect a lot of opinions about paint jobs on the drive home.
That night Dunwoody wraps up Groovin' on the Green at Brook Run Park with a Bon Jovi tribute band. If the city doesn't cancel for weather, we're bringing a cooler, two lawn chairs and rain jackets.
Friday night is Hocus Pocus on the big screen at City Springs, also free. Neighbors voted for it this year, and there's a costume contest before the movie starts.
Fair warning: Tropical Storm Isaias is expected to push heavy rain and gusty wind into metro Atlanta from late Friday through Sunday, with Saturday the wettest. The wine festival is under a tent and runs rain or shine. For the car show, the concert and the movie, check the event page before you go.
One thing for the grown-ups: early voting starts Tuesday, October 13, and where you go depends on your county. We listed the closest sites in Fulton, DeKalb and Gwinnett below, along with a Buckhead steakhouse built around a stone fireplace, a Sandy Springs river house to guess the price on, and a Border Collie named Baxter.

The leaves are starting to come down. What's stressing you out most about your house right now?

This issue is sponsored by Peachy Insurance
When was the last time you actually looked at your homeowners policy?
For most folks in Atlanta and the Perimeter area, the honest answer is "when we bought the house." Which would be fine, except home values around here are up $150K to $200K+ since 2020. If your policy hasn't kept up, your dwelling limit is probably short of what it would actually cost to rebuild today. That gap won't show up on your bill. It only shows up when you file a claim, which is the worst time to find out.
Peachy Insurance is Atlanta-based and built to make this kind of check painless. No call center, no upselling, no runaround. Just a licensed local agent who looks at your full picture and gives you a straight answer on where you stand.
Three things worth a quick look while it's on your mind:
Home: Whether your dwelling limit still reflects what it would actually cost to rebuild your house right now
Auto: Whether your coverage is current for every vehicle you drive, plus rental reimbursement if yours ends up in the shop
Bundle: Whether pairing home and auto makes sense for your situation (Perimeter households sometimes save up to 25%)
Takes about 5 minutes. Free, no pressure.

🍷 4th Annual Sandy Springs Wine Festival
City Green at City Springs
1 Galambos Way, Sandy Springs, GA
Sunday, October 11, 2026
Reserve Tasting 2:00-3:15 PM, General Tasting 3:00-5:00 PM
$75 general, $135 reserve, 21+
See the wine list and grab tickets
If your idea of a good Sunday is a glass of wine in one hand and a little plate of food in the other, the City Green is the place to be. The Greater Perimeter Chamber puts up a big tent at City Springs, and inside there are more than 175 wines to try.
We're talking Italian reds, Burgundy, Bordeaux, rosé from Provence, and a sparkling Chardonnay from Wolf Mountain Vineyards right here in Georgia. Thirteen local spots bring free bites, including Bocado, Fogo de Chao, Tre Vele, River Ridge Bistro and Sugar Daddy Cookies. Haden Rider's jazz quartet, Rare Affair, plays all afternoon.
The Reserve Tasting is where the wine nerds go. For $135 you get in at 2, an hour before the general crowd, and you get pours of bottles you won't find at the grocery store, like Quilceda Creek Cabernet and Cos d'Estournel from Bordeaux. That ticket covers the general session too, and part of the money goes to Solidarity Sandy Springs, which fights food insecurity right here in town.
General tickets are $75 all-in, so no surprise fees at checkout. For 175 wines plus food from 13 restaurants, that's a STEAL. It's rain or shine under the tent, 21 and up with ID, and there are no refunds.
Eat a real lunch first, park in the City Springs deck, and line up a ride home. Grab your tickets this week and bring the friend who always knows which bottle to open.

🍽️ Blue Ridge Grill
Hickory-grilled steaks and Georgia trout | Alton Brown's favorite steak spot in Atlanta
The first cool night of October always sends my wife and me looking for a fireplace. Blue Ridge Grill on West Paces Ferry has a big one, a stacked-stone fireplace in a dining room built to feel like an old mountain cabin. Log walls, beams pulled out of an 1890s cotton mill, red leather booths.
It's locally owned by Susan DeRose and Richard Lewis, and it has a loyal crowd. Over 7,000 OpenTable reviews and it's still sitting at a 4.9. Alton Brown has called it his go-to for steak in Atlanta, which is a pretty good co-sign.
The Grilled Georgia Trout ($34) with lemon butter is the dish regulars keep bringing up. I'd start with the Iron Skillet Mussels ($20) or the Devils on Horseback, bacon-wrapped dates with a maple glaze ($12). If you're doing steak, the 8oz Filet Mignon is $59 and the 20oz Prime Bone-In Ribeye is $89.
For a cold night, the Braised Beef Short Rib ($43) with mashed potatoes and red wine jus is the move. Get the Corn Soufflé and the Mac and Cheese with Bacon for the table.
Then split the Ice Cream Pie. One reviewer said it could feed three, and that tracks.
Here's the honest part. This isn't a cheap night out, and "value" is the one score on OpenTable that lags a little behind the rest.
If you want to try it without the dinner bill, go for weekday lunch. The American Wagyu Burger is $22 and the BLT is $19.
There's also a business-casual dress code: collared shirts for guys, no hats or gym clothes. Take a minute to check the dress code before you hand your keys to the free valet. Reservations are a good idea on Fridays and Saturdays.

📚 Prelude Bookstore
You know that first cool October evening when all you want is a blanket, something warm to drink, and a book you can't put down? For years, finding that book in Dunwoody meant a drive to a chain store or a click on Amazon. Not anymore.
Prelude opened last fall in the Shops of Dunwoody, right next door to Valor Coffee. Owner Abbi Diego is a librarian's daughter with a master's in children's librarianship, and she's raising four boys here in town. Diego told Rough Draft that Dunwoody not having its own independent bookstore made the decision easy.
The shelves run about 60% grown-up books and 40% kids' books, with a mix of gifts tucked in. It's a small, quiet shop. Abbi's whole hope was that people would wander in with a coffee from next door and tell her what they're reading, so go ahead and do that.
Where Prelude really shines is the calendar. Story time for kids 0 to 6 happens every Thursday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m., and most of the book clubs cost nothing extra since buying the book is your ticket. If you like being scared, the Horror/Thriller Book Club meets Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. to talk about Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare.
Want something a little more competitive? Speed Puzzling on Friday, Oct. 23 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. puts teams of two against a 500-piece jigsaw for a prize. Tickets are $40 per team on Eventbrite, snacks are covered, you keep the puzzle, and BYOB is welcome.
Parking in the shopping center lot is free. Heads up that the store is closed Mondays, and if you can't make it in, you can still order through Prelude's Bookshop.org page and the sale counts for the store.

♻️ Chamblee's curbside composting is here
Chamblee residents can now put food scraps at the curb. The city's new partnership with CompostNow launched Wednesday, Oct. 7, at $19 a month plus a one-time $19 setup fee, and you can cancel anytime.
You get a 7-gallon curbside bin, a smaller countertop bin and compostable liners. Because it goes to an industrial facility, it takes things a backyard pile can't, like meat, dairy, small bones, pizza boxes and paper towels. Townhomes, condos and apartments can sign up too.
Members also get a free 40-pound bag of finished compost each year. You can sign up for Chamblee curbside composting and pick your start date on CompostNow's page.

💧 Sandy Springs pushes to take over its water system from Atlanta
Mayor Rusty Paul used his Sept. 15 State of the City to say Sandy Springs is determined to run its own water system, which Atlanta owns today. Mediation between the two cities was set to begin Sept. 17.
Paul pointed to hotels that can't flush toilets above the third floor at certain times of day, hospitals short on water pressure and ongoing leaks. He said he's optimistic about a deal and has a good relationship with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, but if talks fail, the city could go to court and use eminent domain.
This fight goes back to before Sandy Springs became a city in 2005, and years of stalled talks between the two cities headed to mediation this summer. State law gives Fulton and its 15 cities until the end of the year to finalize service agreements like this one.

🚓 Brookhaven says crime dropped 12% in 2025
At his Sept. 24 State of the City address, Brookhaven Mayor John Park said all eight FBI index crimes went down in 2025. Overall crime fell 12%, and violent and property index crimes were down 20%.
Park also talked up the $605 million Northbend redevelopment that's turning the old Corporate Square office park into a new neighborhood, replacing offices with townhomes, apartments, retail, a medical office hub and five acres of greenspace. He said 75% of Brookhaven is now within a 10-minute walk of a park.
On taxes, Park defended this year's millage increase and noted Brookhaven still has the second-lowest rate among DeKalb cities.

🔥 Free smoke alarms are available for Roswell homes
Roswell Fire and the American Red Cross installed 101 free smoke alarms in 34 homes around Liberty Square on Sept. 19, part of the Red Cross Sound the Alarm campaign. Crews also walked each family through a fire escape plan.
You don't have to live in that neighborhood to get one. Any Roswell resident can request free smoke alarms and installation by calling the Red Cross at 470-961-2945.
A reminder for all of us: smoke alarms expire after about 10 years. Test yours monthly, and keep one on every level of the house plus inside and outside each bedroom.

🐾 Meet Baxter
Six years old, 47 pounds, and still figuring out that people can be trusted. Baxter is a Border Collie mix at the Atlanta Humane Society, and right now he's one of their featured dogs.
He came from a rough situation before Atlanta Humane took him in. Since then he's been working with the staff on trusting people and getting comfortable in the world, and they say he's made big progress. He still needs a minute with someone new, but once he feels safe he turns into a sweet, affectionate guy who wants to play.
So he'd do best with a patient household that won't rush him. He's gentle, he likes to have fun with his people, and he can't wait to run around with someone he trusts.
Here's the part that makes this easier. Baxter qualifies for Atlanta Humane's Welcome Trial, so you can take him home for up to 14 days and see how he settles in before you make it official. For a dog who warms up slowly, two weeks on your couch tells you a lot more than 20 minutes in a meet room.
His adoption fee is $25, down from the usual $75 for adult dogs. He's already neutered, and Atlanta Humane dogs are vaccinated, seen by a vet and a behavior team, and go home with a starter kit. You can read Baxter's full profile and see how the two-week Welcome Trial works for him, then head to the Westside adoption center with a photo ID (and landlord permission if you rent). Ask for ID #59058974.
It's about a 25-minute drive from the Perimeter when traffic cooperates. If you've got some patience and a spot on the couch, go say hi to him this weekend.

🆓 Movies by Moonlight, Hocus Pocus
For the first time, Sandy Springs let neighbors vote on the October movie, and the Sanderson sisters won. Hocus Pocus plays Friday night on a 30-foot screen on the Heritage Amphitheatre lawn, and it costs nothing to get in.
Gates and concessions open at 7, with a trivia slideshow on the screen while you wait. The movie starts once the sun goes down, around 7:15 or a little after. Come in costume, because there's a family-friendly costume contest before the movie.
Concessions sell popcorn, hot dogs and candy, plus beer and wine for the grown-ups. For the kids there's a $5 Moonlight Mocktail, ginger ale and grenadine with a glowing ice cube, and that's the part they'll be talking about Saturday morning.
Blankets and low-back chairs are welcome. Leave the dog, the tent and the folding table at home. The tiered lawn fills up fast on a nice night, so claim your spot close to 7.
If the weather turns, the city posts updates on its Facebook page.
Trick-or-Treaters Are Coming Up Your Front Steps. Make Sure Your Liability Coverage Is Ready.
In about three weeks, a parade of little superheroes will be climbing your front steps in the dark.If one of them trips on a wobbly railing, or your dog gets spooked and nips a kid at the door, the liability part of your homeowners or renters policy can help with medical bills and legal costs after a covered claim, up to your limit. Some policies limit or exclude dog bites, so check yours. A lot of policies start at $100,000 in liability, and the Insurance Information Institute suggests $300,000 to $500,000 for most homeowners. So while you're hanging the fake cobwebs, tighten loose railings, tape down extension cords, light up the walkway, and swap the candles in your pumpkins for battery lights.
Not sure what your liability limit is, or whether an umbrella policy makes sense for your family? That's a quick question for a Peachy agent.
